Royal fern, 1887 sheet
A single frond of royal fern, Osmunda, pressed on a sheet 41 by 29 centimetres. The frond is 74 centimetres long from the base of the stipe to the tip, and the lowest pinnae are folded back where the card was too small for them. The collection note reads 14 June 1887, a fen edge, a rough meadow with standing water.
The label is in brown ink in a small, careful hand. It names the place as the lower end of a river valley in the lowlands, gives the collector's initials, and carries a number that matches a pencilled note on the back. The back also carries an earlier accession number, struck through.
We photographed both sides in one session on 3 March 2014. The front capture is the reference copy. The back is kept as a separate file because the pencilled note is hard to read at reduced size.
Files
| File | Side | Format | Pixels | Size |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FB-S-F-0031a | Front | TIFF, 16-bit | 9,840 by 6,960 | 2.4 GB |
| FB-S-F-0031b | Back | TIFF, 16-bit | 9,840 by 6,960 | 2.2 GB |
| FB-S-F-0031j | Front, reduced | JPEG | 2,400 long side | 3.1 MB |
The total master size is 4.6 GB. The reduced JPEG is the file most readers will want, and it shows the leaflets and the label clearly. The masters are kept for anyone who needs the pencilled note read under magnification.
The entry sits in the fern index beside the other single sheets. The method used to transcribe the label is set out on the working methods page.
