Grass sheets
The grass and sedge section holds 388 sheets, arranged in nine folders by genus. The folders are numbered G1 to G9, and each has its own index in the back cover. The sedges are the largest group, so the sedge master files have their own page.
Folders
- G1 to G3: meadow grasses
- 112 sheets, mostly collected between 1900 and 1910. Includes the meadow folio, described on its own page.
- G4 to G6: fescues and bents
- 96 sheets. Several have pencilled corrections to the genus names. We record those in the ledger rather than fixing them silently.
- G7 to G9: sedges
- 180 sheets, with 1,140 master images, the largest set in the archive. See the sedge master files page.
Grass sheets are scanned in two passes. The first captures the whole sheet at the copy stand. The second moves the camera closer to each specimen, because the spikelets of many grasses are too small to read at sheet scale.
Several sheets are held down with paper strips that have lifted. The second pass therefore includes the inside of any fold where the specimen is partly hidden. Those extra files are listed with the entry as an inside file, with the suffix i.
The meadow folio is the most consistent group in the section. Its sheets were pressed by a single group over a few weeks, and the labels follow one format throughout.
