Meadow grasses folio, 1902

A cloth-bound folio holding 60 sheets of meadow grasses, collected in June and July 1902 by a group of schoolteachers who each took a day at the water meadows. Each sheet is 40 by 28 centimetres. The folio opens flat, so the sheets were photographed in place, with a foam spacer under the spine to keep the pages level.

The first sheet is an index in printed form, with columns for the collector's name, the date and the meadow. We have transcribed it in full and kept the transcription beside the image. Several meadows appear more than once, and their labels do not agree with each other on the spelling of the field names.

Parts

Part Files Format Size
Index sheet 2 TIFF 1.2 GB
Sheets 1 to 30 30 TIFF 19 GB
Sheets 31 to 60 30 TIFF 20.8 GB

The masters total 41 GB. The reduced files are the size most readers need, and they keep the arrangement of each specimen legible. The full masters are kept at their original resolution for anyone who later wants to read the handwriting under a loupe on a screen.

Folio pages run in the order of the binding, which is also the order of the reference numbers FB-S-G-0001 to FB-S-G-0060. Where a sheet has a loose slip tucked behind it, the slip is photographed as its own file and listed beside the sheet it belongs to.
